Back in 2020, Visa made the first step toward removing the signature requirement for customers making purchases with their credit card. At the time, the big change was that merchants did not need the customer to sign anything at the time of purchase. Now they’re taking this one step further.
As of March 20, 2025, Visa has announced that they will be making the signature panel and digital cardholder signature on physical cards optional in the U.S. This means that in the near future, merchants may not find a signature panel on cards presented at checkout by their customers. In situations where the merchant needs to verify the customer’s identity, Visa recommends asking to see a passport or driver’s license.
This should not change your day-to-day transactions considering it’s been several years since the signature requirement has been removed. Visa encourages merchants to access the Visa Support Hub for further details. Through this portal, merchants can submit a query or create a case if needed.
